The next time you’re on the job, look to your left and then to your right. Do the people next to you seem to be stressed out? If not, then you probably are. A study on job stress found that 13 percent of workers find their jobs always stressful, while 21 percent find their jobs often stressful. That’s a third of the office.

Here is a surprise about the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago survey: It was taken in 2006. That’s before our current recession began.Today, economic pressure has ratcheted up tension in the workplace. Downsizing, growing responsibilities, and uncertainty are creating headaches, high blood pressure, and depression.

The climate is taking a toll on companies. ?A University of Melbourne report found that Australia?s economy loses $730 million a year due to job-linked depression. The bottom line is especially impacted by lost productivity and the cost of replacing burned out employees.

I’ve found that most employee stress can be traced to breakdowns in communication. Our education system teaches leaders a lot about facts and figures but not much about listening, outlining a vision, and defining expectations.

I speak to groups about how the challenges are not going away anytime soon. ?But you can learn how to get around these obstacles and stay on the path to success.

Or you can hope that a third of your workforce will magically start to love their jobs again.
