Some?people have a verbal habit that can become a serious turnoff to others.?For instance, parents of teenagers may have noticed their kids using the word, “like” a lot.?Fortunately, most children tend to grow out of this habit.

In the professional world, you may be defined by something you’re not aware of saying.? Years ago I worked with a hospital adminstrator who had a an unusual habit whenever she was nervous or didn’t know what to say.? She would softly clap her hands twice and say, “yay.”

I realized that the woman had no idea what she was saying and she would go though this routine in almost any situation.?At first it was a little charming but over time it became a bit creepy. Behind her back, people would make fun of her behavior. Did this undermine her position?

Do you have a catch phrase that you use all the time and don’t even think about??On the job, do you confuse people with corporate lingo that they have no hope of understanding??And do you come from a workplace where cursing like a sailor is the norm but would be judged poorly by the outside world.

As a professional speaker, I routinely record my talks so that I can find out if I’m falling into any patterns that I need to break.?Words define us and you may not be aware of those that are defining you.
