Are you missing an important process from your training? We sometimes think the training is one way communication. That it’s just about throwing out as much information as you can to an audience and expecting them to catch it all, and it will go in the mind that they’ll use it right away.

Doesn’t always happen because sometimes you need people to have a chance to think about what they’re learning.

Here’s something I do in my presentations. Now these might be hour to 90 minute talks. I’ll set aside a few short breaks, where I’ll tell the audience, “Okay, I’m going to stop talking. Turn to the person next to you. For the next few minutes, talk about something you have learned today that you can implement right away.”

And then I’ll have pairs, it could be three people, they’ll switch. After it’s done I may ask the audience, “Hey, what were a few of the takeaways?”

A few things this does. People have a chance to consider what they been learning and start to think about it in terms of action items and not just concepts.

It also gives me some feedback about all the points that I’m making, what are some of those ones that really stuck with the audience? Training aid is improved when it becomes two way communication.
