A good library has uncovered an important productivity secret. I’m a fan of libraries and I’ve noticed that that libraries understand their role. A library is not a museum.
That means that libraries sometimes get rid of books. Often they’re able to be recycled through book sales. But at a certain point in time, the shelves have to be cleared out.
Sometimes a book, over time, has become worn out. It doesn’t make financial sense to repair it it doesn’t make financial sense to repair it. There may have been demand at one point for 20 copies of the block but over time become less popular. You don’t need 20 copies filling the shelves because a library may not be able to expand. There’s limited space inside.
And sometimes, some books become outdated. Why am I telling you this? Because often, we hold on to things too much. Maybe we’re hoarding too many documents, when we kind a need to get rid of them because it’s hard to find things in our office.
Maybe there are old ideas or processes, think of a library. If it’s not serving you, maybe it’s time to let go. And perhaps you just need more space. Maybe those things that you used to keep on paper, could be saved electronically.
Libraries have been around for a while. Their roles continue to change but they understand they need to stay relevant. A library isn’t a museum and your business shouldn’t be either.
