They are a major part of your job and achieving them will contribute to your success. The challenge is they won’t happen overnight.
Unfortunately, you may never have the chance to pursue them. Little distractions come up and eat away at your free time at work. As a result, you keep pushing back when you’ll focus on your goals.
Eventually, there is a reckoning and not achieving your goals may carry a price. Maybe you needed to put out little fires in the office to serve the greater good. But some may see you as the person who couldn’t complete the mission.
To help you pursue your goals better, consider these tips:
Schedule Your Goals and Protect Your Time
You block out time for meetings on your calendar. Why not schedule time to focus on your goals? When you block off a half hour or an hour, then your prevent others from scheduling something at that same time.
Colleagues will respect a boundary but will run wild over an open schedule. Don’t let their needs play too big a role in how much time you’re spending on your goals.
You’re Forced to Act
When you have a big goals with an unspecified timeline, it’s easy to delay progress. There will be lots of excuses to justify procrastination.
But distractions at work are part of the game. Your ability to quickly navigate them will determine your success. Remember, the person who goes to the gym, gets more fit, rather then the one who can’t find time to go there. Progress come from an ongoing commitment.
If the time you blocked out on your calendar is overridden by a larger issue, then reschedule your goal and keep your commitment.
Visibility Matters
If you have a big goal at work, does it not make sense to be visibly making an effort to achieve it? There’s a good chance your progress on the task is being watched by superiors. You don’t want them wondering how you’re spending your day. Take away the mystery and fill them with confidence.
